    Sick of cameras

I have recently taken a management type position at work I am in the delivery business and have been for years. Recently my company has decided to install cameras in all our trucks. The cameras view both inside cab and roadside views and when working correctly go off in the case of sudden stop or collision which would be ok but the CO. has decided to use these cameras to inforce a lot of other stupid policies. Its hard enough to find good drivers these days without watching over there shoulder all the time and what they pay the driver is not that great either. Just wanted to hear any thoughts on the subject anyone had. thanks.

Sounds like Obama administration style micromanaging. I guess if you are having issues with drivers for whatever reasons it could be a good thing but I could see where it crosses the line. If the person is a good driver and employee it shouldn't matter who is watching right?

Thanks. I guess that's the logic behind it and they tell us its all about safety but it seems to me it all boils down to lawsuits, lawyers, and money like everything else. Im afraid insurance companies will be trying to push cameras in personal vehicles to prove fault before long.

They may but I am sure that will push the bounds of privacy a bit to much lol

Wife drive a School Bus. It's got Cameras looking at Cameras. Set up for unruly kiddos but they have used against drivers too.

I don't see how it improves "safety" to have a camera pointed at a driver or the road ahead. Backup cameras are a different matter. IMO it is the way you have it figured. All about proving fault, insurance claims, driver discipline/termination, etc:

If that is how a company feels they need to operate or forced to operate by insurance providers and drivers are willing to drive under those conditions...then call it what it is.

I am about due for my next DOT physical and debating on whether to do it to keep my CDL or just let it lapse. Haven't been using it anyway. Personally, I won't be micro managed to that extent.

We have grits a in our company work trucks and use them to track drivers that may become a problem. It's not all accident reporting but used as a leading Indicator for accident prove individuals.

Work morale will always stink when your employees feel like they have a thumb on their head at all times. When work morale stinks, keeping good employees is tough

I drove an A&M bus for 2 years. They have upwards of 16 cameras on every bus. They do a lot of CYA in case of accidents and claims. If it's a good driver with a clear conscience, morale won't suffer. The only problems we ever had with turnover and morale were the people who wanted to bend or break rules. Those aren't the ones you want driving anyway.

Thanks guys. It seems like a lot of y'all see it the same way I see it. A big intrusion of privacy it's a shame we are heading in this direction.

Intrusion of privacy........on a company vehicle......during working hours???? How is it an intrusion of privacy? It's the EXACT same as a camera on any other piece of property owned by the company. I am a HUGE fan of cameras. We absolutely must have them here at work (psychiatric hospital). If they are using the to micromanage then it will come out by everyone getting reprimanded for any little thing. There are tons of things we could get onto our employees for based on our cameras but we don't micromanage like that. I just can't see getting upset about an employer using cameras at their discretion to help their business in any way (whether for safety or other reasons).

                        Just my opinion of course.

Thanks I think I understand your perspective but one of the best perks to having a trucking or driving job is not having someone standing over you all day. The freedom of doing things how you want and at your own pace and working by yourself can be great for certain people .

I DO believe that if they are using them to micromanage then they are just not great at making good business decisions. Micromanaging of any kind generally never works out well for a company or management of that company.

Seems to me that the cameras also ID the good/great drivers and that gives them a leg up over the not-so-good ones for promotions, better routes, working hours, raises, etc.
