    Controlled burn question...

Has anyone ever done it on their property? Who do you contact? How did it affect deer. I know it would prolly attract a bunch of deer with all the new growth. I think our property would really benefit it has been consumed by under growth in which most of it has no nutritional value. One of the guys is scared it would burn the whole place to the ground lol we lost a lot of trees to the drought. But I believe it needs it

Don't light anything until you get some professional guidance! Contact a biologist or wildlife manager that has experience in doing prescribed burns. There is a ton of stuff that needs to be done right to have a good outcome. "Controlled burn" is a misleading statement, once you light it you are responding to everything the fire does. Your not in control, nature and the fire is! You could have a real bad experience if you haven't done proper preparation and have the necessary resources on hand to react if something happens. Sure, anyone can strike a match, not burn the neighbors property, not get injured, and still get lucky and have some beneficial results from the burn.

apparently its very beneficial since I've been watching deer across the fence all season on their lush grass

Or call your local Texas Forest Service office. They will have good info on fire lines and contractors

I agree with Bassmatt. We have done this in WI and IL and the results in the forrest were incredible. Went from a dead leaf covered dessert to a lush green forrest bed. Deer love the result. It is misleading and requires professional help. Like bassmatt says, it is not a controlled burn. Once you light it you most likely can not stop the main burn until it hits your prepared boundaries. If the boundaries are not done correctly or are not big enough, who knows where it will stop.

get with your local county extension agent. he will inform you to contact local fire dept because passing motorists love to call fire dept when they see smoke. you will also have to contact texas environmental quality agency. the sheriff office is another agency to inform. if there is a burn ban in place nrcs will help with a fire plan to get around the ban. pre game for the burn saves lots of headaches. fire breaks and having lots of help and equipment is the only way to go. there is more to burning than just lighting fire. you need the proper humidity and wind speed and direction to get the most out of a fire. ive conducted several burns of thousands of acres in south texas and knock on wood never had one get away from me.

I checked into several years ago. Had a guy come out and look at the place. Problem was, even if you used someone that was insured and bonded, they could not guarantee me that the fire could not get out of control. I'm sure it rarely does, but I did not want to burn down my place and maybe my neighbors.

My uncle has done it many a times. I know he took several classes on prescribed burns and really learned a lot. He enjoys doing it and is safe about it, always measuring the wind and humidity, providing good back burns, clearing brush from under valuable trees. I'd suggest taking some classes, would be interesting and then you would know how to do it vs having to pay somebody

Ill say it has been a great benefit for him at the ranch in Camp Wood.

Check out noble foundation and search prescribed burn. Great info there and the tools you need. Always have someone there that has done it before
