How long does it take to recuperate from open heart surgery?

If a patient was fairly active before and other than the heart issue was in otherwise good health. It makes me hurt seeing my dad in pain.

How long before the average patient can return to certain activities? Nothing strenuous.

We had a hunter out here one time that told me three weeks ago he had open heart surgery. This was about four years ago or so. Aparently it didn't bother him to pull his bow too much.

it depends a lot on the person. I've seen a week, and I've seen people never get back to their old selves. Hopefully he gets back quickly.

My buddies dad was shooting his bow after about 3 months. Got to get up and be active. Start slow and be consistent.

They removed a vein from one leg for the bypass and also did valve replacement.

He already had an incision on the other leg from an angiogram. After he's released, he'll be going to therapy.

Thank you. It's hard not seeing him able to do things.

The sternum will take a while to heal up.
The big issue is to get as active as soon as he can. Fear can be a problem, once he can get active he'll see that all is fine. Recovery is much better and quicker with confidence.
                  Best wishes to him!

When I was 50 I had a quadruple bypass. Was about 3 months till I was shooting my bow, but there is no need to rush it. A year later I was doing a DIY drop hunt in AK. He will heal quicker than you think. Get him walking all he can. Best thing he can do IMO, and that thing they will send him home with that you blow into! I asked my doctor if he stood over me with a buck knife to split my ribs? He didn't get it!

Had triple by-pass in 2007. It took a good while to recoope because I didn't do rehab. My Doctor said since I was active I didn't nee rehab. Found out too late that that was BS. Make sure he does some kind of rehab. Good luck and hang in there.

You know from seeing your pop he had his sternum sawed and opened if he had bypass. Its a pretty invasive procedure. I would say look 4-6 months before he has a full range of motion and comfortable in most environments.

My dad was back in action in 3.5 months from a quintuple bypass. His surgeon couldn't believe he healed and bounced that fast. Was pulling his bow at 3.5 months even though 6 months is the norm. Tell him to walk an hour everyday. Sometimes twice. Or walk as much as he can if he can't make the hour

My dad was about 4 to 5 months. My father in law was about 2 months. Depends on the person. I walked 3.5 miles 2 days after having 3 stents and a major heart attack. The possibility of death is a tremendous motivator.
