question for east texas duck hunting guy

Ok, first off, I'm not trying to steal anyone's honey holes or anything like that. Just looking for some suggestions. I used to duck hunt hard and heavy when I was younger and no drive was too far and we killed many a birds. However, I ain't seriously hunted hard in probably 8 or 9 years, and have a 10 yr old son that's foaming at the mouth to get into going. We live on the north end of rayburn, but I refuse to fight every redneck that can blow a duck call in the Marions ferry area or up the Angelina river north of the lake. We used to make regular trips to joaquin to hunt the north toledo wma and always seemed to fair very well as well as the jungle over in lake livingston. But then again, that was many moons ago. Anyone have any insight on these places now or any other recommendations on where some birds are being seen? I'd just like to captivate his interest and do a little shooting rather than take him and sit all morning and only hear a squealer or two through the woods at daylight. Just something I'm wanting to get him into rather than video games and tv all the time....I used to love going with my dad as a kid. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance guys.

I know I can go scout, and i stay on the water enough to know where birds generally are and aren't, I was just looking for alternative suggestions....I work in the oilfield and my son was begging me to take him thursday morning because I told him how my dad always used to take us every thanksgiving, and I'm in west tx right now at work and won't be home until late tomorrow evening, and though I have a general idea, I just ain't been ate up with it like I used to be enough to know somewhere to go sit and let him see some birds and squeeze a few off.....whoever came up with the idea of working for a living arta be stoned lol

Gone are the good ol days when we used to get after'm ol buddy. Those old places that only a handful of hard core duck heads knew about are the starting point for most today. I'll go about 3 times a year anymore. It's always to take Trapper so he can shoot a few, I couldn't care less about them myself.

I already know cuz...we used to lose a lot of sleep and have entirely too many cool pops this time of the year chasing feathers....I think I've went once each of the last 2 years. But if Tyler's wanting to get into it, then I may have to start looking again...just don't really wanna go to all the trouble we used to go to just for him to not enjoy it.

Understood 100%. If you're still home when I get home I'll holler at Steph's cousin. He's hard at'm all the time and usually gets on a few. We'll pile up and go see about knocking a few down. Text coming.

Good news is that there are supposed to be a ton of birds this year so maybe even a few of the leftover spots will give up a few of them. With the early cold spell, I have already seen a lot of birds down here. Like you, I'm an old duck hunter that just hasn't found the time or energy to go fight the crowds lately. Its tempting, but I just have too many irons in the fire. Good luck! Its great that you're getting the youngun into it.
