    What size log splitter?

We were visiting my cousin up near Coleman this afternoon. He burns about a cord of firewood a month. We started talking about log splitters, and he said you could get a 5 ton splitter at Harbor Freight for about $295. They have a 10 ton pneumatic (like a car jack) for $119, but I think that's junk.

For dry oak logs up to about 18-20" in diameter, it's my understanding you need at least a 20 ton, preferably a 22-23 ton splitter. I know some of you guys have these or have made them. Any comments? Also I assume a vertical splitter is much better because you don't have to lift a heavy log up onto the ramp.

We have a 35 ton. It's a beast. Go big.

I have a 22 ton. It works great but the 35 ton will split a lot more wood and hold up longer.

Just bought the Troybilt from Lowes last week. Its 27 ton and works both vertical and horizontal. Split about 3 cords with it already and was very pleased with it. I got it for $1299.

Make sure you also check the cycle time. You don't want to have to wait till lunch to be able to load the next log
