I'm happy with 320 acres HF depending on cover/terrain.

As for the second question, if i found my dream place and it happened to be a HF place i'd cut the fence down to regular height.
      Why?

I can only guess you ask why to my second sntence.
And the answer to that is, (I) would never be able to find the same saticfaction in the woods i do now if i were hunting deer on a place where i knew every deer on the place and could not expect to see the unexpected

Thats MY opinionated answer to his question.

A lot will depend on terrain and amount over cover vs. open land. If mostly wooded I could see getting by with 500 acres, but after a while you'll probably wish you had more. I would jump on a high fence place, 300 acres would be the bare minimum I would consider with a fence.

i was looking at a place that was 170 acres. The neighbors are some small tracts with lots of blinds. If I got it I would probably hi fence it just because of the adjoining pressure.
Is that too small a place?
It actually all or more than I could afford.
Would I get bored on 170 acres?

My BIL owns a 525 acre high femce property in east texas. Owned it for more than 10 years and still finds bucks that evade cameras and deer stands. Its alot harder than everyone thinks it is.

To the OP, it would be nice to have that opprtunity to own a HF. You could get it mld and the state issues x amount of tags. Thats fun for kids/grandkids to even be able to see deer. Manage it the way you like, and it can very well become your dream property.

To me, 170 acres is just not enough room...I would get bored. But that's just me.

Small high fenced place sounds like a lot of work to me, Do the deer have water? Do the deer have enough to eat? How many deer do we need to kill so our habitat can support them? Hope we don't shoot too many, then what will we hunt?

                  I personally wouldn't do it.

If you are worried about it being a "hunt" just keep your numbers low.

A HF place is what YOU make of it, not what anyone on the internet thinks of it. You control the water, you control the food, you control the quality, you control the numbers.

Or just don't run any cameras so you honestly don't know what all exactly is on the place.

I have hunted a 500 acre HF place for the past 5 years or so and love it. Just because you have a HF doesnt mean you can shake the feed bucket and they come running. I swear to you those deer know when the gate opens. We hunted a cull buck for 4 years before we ended up getting him at 7 years old and it took my wife with a rifle to get him. We see bucks we havent seen before every couple of years so you dont know every deer by name on the place like some make it sound. I have been hunting two different bucks this year and have only seen one of them and only one time at that. Had him at 35 yards but was just a little far for me. Good luck in whatever you decide and do whatever makes you happy thats what hunting is all about.

My answer on 1000 acres was not how many people you could hunt, it was how many deer you can kill and keep a stable herd...4 hunters cannot each take a buck and keep a herd going...

Depends on what part of state it's in. 5 hunters on 500 acres of east Texas hard woods is more than plenty. 500 acres in Del Rio is nothing.

People saying that 1,000 acres should be the minimum for HF crack me up. We have 844 acres HF and it took me 3 years to kill a 8.5 yr old 12 pt with my bow. Obviously terrain has a lot to do with it but if you have good cover then you could easily do what you are talking about on 400-500 acres. Wouldn't want to go much smaller then that though.

                                Mike,

Respectfully there are plenty of ranches with density/age etc. where on 1K acres management minded hunters could each kill a trophy buck and cull others--HF or LF.
