Looking at water softener for house. Was told the salt free systems do not work. Is this true. I'm on water well with septic.

Nothing wrong with the salt type units. Just be sure that it is sized properly for the home and the valve it uses is fully-flowing. A lot of the cheaper softeners have valves that drop way down in diameter internally and restrict water flow.
Morrison makes some really good ones. -
