Got back from Kansas this morning arund 2:00 am. Man is it ever green in SE Kansas around Greenwood. They have had 12 inches in the last week. I didn't get to spend much time scouting or glassing the property I hunt but did see tons of country. The deer that I saw all were fat as butter balls. Saw one good buck but no where near the place I hunt. This year could be a record year. Lots of rain and cool weather. Spent most of the time fixing water gaps and gathering cattle that got out. We shipped 1000 steers. The rain kept the weight off. These were 50-60 lbs lighter than the ones we shipped out 2 weeks ago. To much rain gives 'em the squirts.

I haven't heard of any being out of velvet. I was really surprised how few a deer we saw though. We spent all day Monday on Four wheelers checking pastures and water gaps and we jumped dang few. When we went and drove around my pasture (640 acres) we didn't see a deer. A few days earlier while feeding, there was was a bachelor group of 5 with a couple of good'uns, including my big one. Day late and a dollar short. The vegitaiton is so thick that you would have to right on top of them to see.

No Mark we didn't see any Pheasants. Those are more to the West. We were in the Flinthills in SE Kansas.
I absolutly love Eureka and the Flinthills. The rolling hills and praries are beautiful. If you have never seen them you owe it to yourself to go visit. This year it was so green. The prarie was green for as far as the eye could see. During the fall the "gold" is even better. No place like it.

hunt north of Salina - between Concordia and Minneapolis (yes, there is a Minneapolis Kansas!). hunting there is consistently very good if not downright awesome. we hunt family farms with a guide we've been with for years.
public land hunting, however, can be iffy. depends on pressure, of course. can be good, can be lousy.
most folks in TX don't have a clue how big pheasant hunting is in KS (or other midwestern states). take Buck Fever in Texas and multiply by a factor of 50! it's a big deal up there. I go places in Texas with my Brittanies and no one knows what they are, or bothers to ask. in Kansas EVERYBODY asks "nice Britts, you bird hunt a lot?" or "how good are you gun dogs?" birds matter up there. bird hunting is huge.
that means every field is bristling with shotguns and orange-clad hunters that first weekend. birds on public land die or are herded to private land pretty quickly up there.
if you're going "once in a lifetime" get a guide - it's worth it. if you've got a chance to step out in the middle of the week on some public land and don't have huge expectations go for it. it just might be very good.

There were lots of adult, mid-size, and baby pheasants walking the road when I was there July 4th week anywhere there were large CRP patches. Was in the Great Bend area. Should be good hunting. Pheasant hunting is very popular the opening weekend but hardly see anyone around after that other than a little Thanksgiving week. Not much public walk-in land around us though and know it is more popular in areas that have more walkin.
