Late morning is always my preferred time for rattling. I've now shot 4 bucks that came to horns. 3 were late morning (9-10 a.m.) and the last one was in the evening.

I've had countless more come to horns late morning, a few early morning, but only one (the one I shot) came in late in the evening. I wasn't even planning to rattle but I saw him sparring with another buck about 200 yards away at last light, and figured, what the heck.

I use a 4X4 mule deer set. Good mass for volume when I want it, lots of tines I can softly tickle together, and no brow ties to crack your thumbs! But Ive also used the fake horns with success too. Timing and location are more important than the horns you use.

Rattling is BY FAR my favorite method of hunting. If they would respond all season, I would not own a feeder or blind! Unlike most responses here, MOST of my rattling is done in the morning. If the weather is right and the timing is right, we will rattle all day. Run-n-gun style on the ground. I can't remember ever rattling from a blind.

Rattled up a cull for a hunter last weekend at about 9:30 am. Bright sunshine and hot...the exact opposite of what I like. Plus it was late. I told them we would go, so we did. First sit yielded this buck in about 30 seconds. That is all I have done this year. Gonna take my boy out next weekend and try some more. He loves it!

I have rattled in lots of bucks at all times during the day. Ive also been on ranches where you don't get any response at all, even during the rut. Depends mainly on timing and buck to doe ratio.

Mid morning seems best at our place. Had a 145 inch 10 at 15 yards last Sunday. Never thought it would work in a 35 mph wind and 5 people there but it did. Most bucks we have rattled up is 17 in a 20 minute sit. We usually rattle in the draws below our tower blinds. So the guys up top can see everything coming from a long way off. The 17 deer sit I was the one rattling down low and I only saw 9 of the 17 bucks. We use hand signals to communicate

I've rattled in a few. last year I saw a buck crossing our wheat field about 400 yards away. I t was cold and calm, I hit the horns as hard as I could and he turned straight towards and ran to right to me. It's crazy that they can pinpoint a sound from that far away.

I rattle every year and 1 time I had 3 bucks come in, 2 spikes and 6pt....that is all.

i have rattled in several bucks, mostly in the am. I have 8 to date. last one i had 5 bucks come in. it was epic. Have not turned one in the eve. saw him at 150 yards and he looked at me when I rattled but did not come until later and it didnt seem to be to the rattle.

Always will approach downwind and watch them circle without fail. I'm sure I've rattled a lot more in than I've actually seen. I have noticed no correlation between am and pm responses. It is more rut timing and the individual mood of the buck.
                        Spot on as usual.

It isn't a tactic I use often and almost never blind call. If o see a buck out of range and don't have anything to loose, I'll give it a shot. Now when I hunted south and west I had a lot of success rattling. Typically I'd hunt feeders in the morning and would rattle mid day. No science to it other than activity at the feeders was dead mid day but bucks where still aggressively seeking does and confrontation. I also haven't seen any more success in AM or PM, but have noted success on blue bird high pressure mornings. The sound seems to carry better on this crisp mornings and I believe they hear it better.

I've rattled up a few, never paid much attention to how many am vs pm, I have learned that if a buck is hanging out with does and you rattle or use a grunt tube he'll run over to his doe and check on her, have seen this several times. One night while predator hunting came up on a doe with a really nice buck stuck to her tail, there were 4-5 other bucks standing around keeping their distance, when we drove up the doe walked off about 75-100 yds, with her pet buck still with his nose stuck to her, I told dad, I'm going to see if I can start a buck fight, I picked up the rattling horns and very lightly rattled them together, every buck around took off at light speed to where the other buck and doe went to, never did know if a fight broke out or not.
