Getting a hide made into buckskin?

Has anyone ever had a deer hide tanned hair-off? I want to start a tradition of making a set of moccasins for each of my kids with the first deer I kill after they're born. First kid born, and first deer shot, now just need a tannery.

Always heard great things about North Texas Tannery up here in Denton, but have only seen hair-on hides from him and on his price list.

I think lots of places will do, but cost will be the issue with most. A friend of mine that traps uses a place out of Wisconsin.

I have a steer hide that I'm taking to North Texas Tannery soon.

Ever considered doing it yourself? I am vaguely trying to get the stuff together to make my own. there are a bunch of good resources out there.

Been down that road before, never again. Getting that soft supple feel that we all love in buckskin takes machinery. And just the scraping alone aint worth it.

I process all my own meat, do my own waterfowl taxidermy, but I'll never try tanning again.

that is good to know going in. there is a tannery in Kerrville that does a lot of hides. Not sure about hair off buckskin though.
