Anyone Cook Wild Turkey for Thanksgiving?

I've heard that the wild turkeys don't taste that great at all, especially compared to a store bought butterball. I've just always wanted to cook a turkey that I shot myself for thanksgiving. Only ever shot at a turkey once (last fall) and all I hit was feathers! Opinions on the turkey eating?

Also, if anyone knows of anyone selling a fall turkey hunt I'd be interested.

I did two of them last year. One roasted and the other fried. Both were great.

That's the best eating there is. I cut the breast in strips, place in bowl with milk and egg then into seasoned flour. Fry 350 degrees till golden brown. You will be amazed.

I think the problem people run into is they try to compare a wild turkey to store bought and tend to over cook them.

Mrs ESP and I always spend thanksgiving week at the deer lease and shoot a wild turkey to cook for thanksgiving. Last year we were without water or elec the whole week due the ice storm. Mrs ESP cooked a full thanksgiving dinner for us. This time we bacon wrapped the entire turkey and even the legs turned out tender and tasty!!

Growing up we couldn't afford a store bought turkey. Mom always cooked a turkey my dad shot. You can over cook them pretty easy but they are tasty. I prefer any wild game over store bought meat.

This is how we do it also. I LOVE fried wild turkey. I would pass over a good buck for a turkey any day.

There`re not like a "butterball' that`s for sure. Different taste and texture. That`s my take away from eating a few.

Considering they live off the land, it`s just a different eating experience.

                      I`ll stick with the ..............butterball.

Chicken fry the breast strips. Darn good eating. Buy a Butterball for Thanksgiving

Leave skin on and pluck the bird. Brine overnight, pat completely dry and deep fry. One of the best turkeys we ever had! People that say differently probably tried to bake them like a traditional store bought, which can dry them out, fast.

Not a huge fan of wild turkey, and there's not much meat. Probably take a few birds to get it done. I'd stick with the store bought.
