Gator dragged someone into the water in LA.

That's terrible. We had a ranch in Madison County that was flat covered in gators…big gators. I wouldn't even let my little kids fish off the bank of any stock pond, creek or tank for this very reason. Not very likely to happen, but scary as hell anyhow.

Growing up in Louisiana we never once thought about something like this happening, even after catching several small ones while bank fishing.. just cut the line and run.

UPDATE ... according to local news this am... false alarm report

kids were joking around and pushing each other into bayou

not sure who called the 5-0 but they responded to a "alligator incident" and that's what was initially reported on the news

I'm scared to go swimming in salt water due to the sharks. If the water had gators, then the fresh water would be off limits for me also.

I've swam in Florida rivers before with gators about 50 yards away. Didn't know about it, though, til later when my friend told me after I got back in his boat!

Another gator went after my dog when I was a youngster in South Mississippi. We had just moved there and none of us knew gators were in the waters. My dog went in for a swim, and I later saw what I thought was a log floating in the water about 60 yards away. As the "log" got closer, I realized it was a gator! The gator went underwater, and I yelled frantically for my dog to get out. When she reached the bank, I grabbed her by the collar and pulled her away. As we got about 10 yards from the bank, the gator popped up with its mouth open right where she had been! We later named that gator "Big Joe" because it was well over 12 ft. We once saw him chomping away at another dead gator floating in the same waters. He would take a bite and churn his whole body to tear off a chunk. Big Joe also loved marshmallows, and it was funny watching him chase away all the other gators from the marshmallows thrown in the water. That was over 30 years ago, and after I moved away I later learned Big Joe was relocated by wildlife authorities for some reason.

And gators are tough. My neighbor hit one in the road at night in South Mississippi. It totaled his car. He said the gator slunk back into the water after he hit it, amazed it was still able to move like it did. We guessed it later died, but to be able to just get up and crawl back in the water after totaling a car tells me those are some strong critters!

And let's just say that a certain ignorant youngster, who knew nothing about game laws or wildlife harassment laws, discovered more than 30 years ago that an arrow tipped with a field point with fishing line tied to it and shot from a 45# youth recurve easily bounces off the back hide of a gator the size of Big Joe!
