Advise for looking for a lease for next season?

This will be my first time to look for a lease, I have always hunted on public land and family leases/friend ranches and have never had to go through this process. Where do I begin? What websites do you guys recommend?

I have looked on craigslist and some other websites with no success. I'm not sure if I'm just too early but I want to make sure I don't miss my chance.

Also, if any TBHers might have a spot open next season please feel free to PM me, I am a very responsible hunter and have always been management minded. I would be bow only but dont mind rifle hunting.

Looking for something within 3-4 or so hours of Dallas, would not mind OK or AR leases either.

I'm in the same boat, man. I started looking at Southeasttexas.com There are a few places on there every now and then. The whole idea of paying money to hunt somewhere has been a factor in the reason I didn't hunt the first 5 years here in Texas. I'm used to the whole, "Could I hunt your land in return for some farm help or part of the deer I harvest?"

Really hoping to land a lease next year, but we'll see. I know of several others who, like me have either lost a hunting place or was involuntarily kicked from their lease. We'll get something, just might take a bit.

Best of luck to you, ultralite09, and if you find a good one with multiple openings, please pm me, I'd like to check it out if that's cool with you.

I think talking it up on here is your best option. Start early and keep your threads bumped to the top. With that being said I would look everywhere you can. There are good leases to be found on Craigslist. But to find one good one you will probably have to wade through 10 or more bad ones.

May not be a bad idea to try to find several guys on here looking for the same thing as you and group up. The more people you have working towards a common goal the better your chances of success.

Best of luck...It is not an easy road, and I don't think there is a right answer.

get ready to pull out the checkbook. having a lease is expensive. would I love to have a lease? like you wouldn't know. but, unfortunately, $10/acre is way outta my price range..

I say the $10/acre is because that's all I seem to find up here in the north texas area..

Thanks for the replies so far, I'm gonna be looking almost daily. Rock star, feel free to shoot me a PM with what you are looking for as well and I'll PM you with anything I find. I got possibly 2 others from Baytown looking with me.

I think it's too early for next year, you pretty much have to wait until after deer season, and on some leases after spring turkey.
When you find a lease that sounds good, you have to be prepared to jump on it quickly, most leases go pretty quick, and good lease or a cheap lease go even quicker.

If that is the case, I'll go ahead and out money aside now and have a check/cash ready when the time comes

I am in the same boat, I live around San Antonio and I haven't been able to hunt besides day leases and family friends leases to shoot a doe. I am new to bow hunting and have been a rifle hunter for my whole life. I am not afraid to spend good money on a lease but I haven't found the right one yet. I will be looking extra hard this year again. Best of luck to y'all.

I've been seeing them posted here for the last 2 years in the classifieds. You just have to check every day,,,,,,several times cause they go fast. Start watching around January. Good luck

Chamber of Commerce in the area you wish to hunt is not a bad place to start if you have no other leads.
