Protein makes a bigger difference than fence height in many S Texas Neighborhoods.

Doesn't make the deer any harder to hunt that the fence is low... Makes the deer exposed to more people that might kill him younger and smaller.

and therefore more rare correct? Either way if they're native they are special I was just curious how many here had true "book" deer and it seems very very few

There are people that have killed over 20.

It's about situation. The deer has to exist to be killed.

Here is a quirky question about the Boone and Crockett rules. My farm and my neighbors farm are under one game fence...{ 2500 acres total} Technically my west fence is open. Technically his east fence is open. This opening is 2 miles [ guess ] long.Specifically my farm is not completely fenced. So does that make us eligible for Boone and Crockett?

Just curious. Doesn't really matter cause I'm never entering anything into a book or contest anyway.

          Anyone know the answer?

Very true. Even with tons of hard work and $ it takes some luck

Doesn't say anything about property lines in their rules. They are ineligible.

                Thanks,

But Doesn't that make an awful lot of ranches ineligible by default? Said differently couldn't you have a ranch with no fence on any perimeter but surrounding neighbors perimeters are fenced? Thus defacto you are fenced.

Not trying to hijack the thread just curious. Frankly don't care what B & C rules are other than curiosity.

technically if you ranch is completely enclosed by hf you are ineligible.

all my neighbors are fenced… if i took my fences down… my deer would still be ineligible even though they would have free reign over 165k acres,

Great thread and great deer! I'm a fan of high fence hunting even though I have never done it. I do however feel like a low fence buck is more special than a high fence buck. Both are hard to hunt but managing becomes easier on high fence, just from the fact that you can control your neighbors from shooting young deer.

                      ^^^

Again thanks, kind of what I thought. And therein lies a fallacy with Boone and Crockett and the whole Hi fence low fence question..

Just west of Water Valley. In its prime that place had more 150-170" deer than any place I'd ever been too and I've been on some nice ground. Terrible management ruined that ranch.

That's to bad, hate to lose a place like that!

I shot a book deer in Maverick County in 2004. No protein. All natural. Grossed 182 and netted 170 5/8. He is officially in the book.

I killed one last year that grossed 187 and netted 180 6/8 on my ranch but it is not eligible. I am high fenced on three sides but so is my neighbor.
