saving for a house - cost help

Hey everyone, my wife and I are getting started on some financial planning to become homeowners in the next few years. Our plan is to buy about 5-10 acres here locally and then build a barndominium on it. So we are looking to have a company come out and do about a 2000 sqft very basic build(slab, the building itself, roofing, and any internal support), and then I'll do most of the work around the house whether it's brick accents or just about anything inside (framing, drywall, electrical). I'm worthless for building the shell of the home or anything to do with engineering out the design or plumbing.

So basically what we're looking to do is have someone come out and build the shell, and then we'll slowly get everything else finished out ourselves. Has anyone else ever done this in a similar way? Any tips or words if advise? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck. Me and the wife are at the same point. I've got the land and a spot picked out. Just haven't gotten enough saved to start yet.

Looking to do the same thing 2000ish sqft with a covered carport to one end and then a shop eventually.

The metal building will need no interior supports. When you get the metal building erected, have it spray foamed next. After that, do the heating and ac. That way while you are framing the interior walls, electrical and plumbing, you will be in comfort.

Doing the same thing but letting builders do a little more. I spent all last week at work talking to different trades and seeing what I could save by doing this or that myself. You would be surprised what you can save. My elec guy I talked to said he would cut $2800 off if I wired up switches/lights/fans/etc..... Waiting on a quote from the plumber that is gona bid it the same way....just do in slab work, etc. I can put a sink and toilet in.

I'll be following this one as I'm hoping to start something down on the coast in the next year.
