Looks to be army worms. They come in swarms and try to eat all they can. I've had them come through my yard one year. Sprayed the entire yard with Permethrin to kill'em. Hundreds and hundreds DOA. The local birds loved me.
I always thought they were the caterpillars that turned into monarch butterflies. I'm not sure if someone told me that, or I just thought it up as a kid.

In a very short time period they have almost stripped the leaves off one of my smaller Oaks. These dang things are everywhere. So what works best to kill them and do I need to spray in the trees as well?
