Well, there are only few times I've ever felt so bad...

    Long story short:

My dad left for the deer lease this afternoon and asked me to check on the two pig traps that he is running on the ranch neighboring my parents place (yes, with permission from the land owner).

When I talked to him he mentioned that he didn't have time to check them this morning so I figured there might be pigs in there from last night and I better go look.

As I walk up to the first trap, I hear the panels of the trap rattling and I smile to myself as I chamber a round into the .22... As I get closer the rattling of metal gets more frantic and I become more excited and think "maybe it's a big ole boar, or maybe there's 4-5 pigs in there!"

No. It was a 1.5 year old spike beating the living **** out of himself trying to get out of the trap.

I immediately ran to the trap, dropping the .22 in the process (I know, not safe). My quick movement didn't help the situation as the spike doubled his effort to escape what I'm sure he thought was certain death. He got his head caught between the gaps of the panels due to his short spikes, and began bawling something awful. I could go the rest of my life without hearing that noise again.

I get the trap door locked open as fast as I possibly can but his head is still caught. Luckily, his horns were short enough for him to free himself without my help. He continued to beat the holy hell out of himself in the trap until I backed away and he found the open door and hauled *** out of there!

As he left I noticed him bleeding all over his face and out of his mouth. I hope he has no broken bones and makes a full recovery.

We even had tried to prevent this from happening by putting wire across the door so that only pigs could squeeze through. I guess that wasn't enough.

Anyways, that's my story. I feel horrible for what happened. And I hope that spike is okay!

I'm sure he will be fine. Definitely not a good thing to have to witness.

We had this happen out in west Texas... But it was a nice 10 pt. probably 3.5 years old. He killed himself before we could get the door open.

The 153 7/8 eight I killed last year was named Cripple horn because at 2, he got in a hog trap and messed his horns up in velvet. I killed him 5 years later.

One reason I use a corral trap. They can jump out .

Cut the top out of the trap if it's tall enough to keep the hogs in

Deer are very resilient and can come back from some pretty nasty incidents. I wouldn't worry about the buck.

On the bright side, you got him out alive. He'll recover and be fine

It only takes one time something to go wrong Glad it all worked out for the best. I think he will be fine amazing animals for sure....

We catch one or two mule deer does a year in our trap in Clarendon. I have cut the bottom out of my trap so it's easier to get the pigs out after you shoot them.

When we see a deer in it, we run up to trap and flip it up on it's side to let them out. Talk about a crazy scene. They have all survived.
