Is this an artifact, or a piece of rock?

I found this in an area where we have found arrow heads. Creek bank in Parker county, near a natural spring. It definitely looks worked on the edges to me. Fits the hand well?

    Side B

    Thanks guys

It's sharp, I think you could skin a deer with it? What's a preform?

Its an artifact. I would say preform but it has some pretty nice finished edges and looks like use wear. I presume then that its a finished blade. The flaking style indicates it is probably pretty early although similar shaped blades were used for thousands of years. My educated guess would be Early Archaic and probably around 7,000 years old.

A preform is a blade shaped piece of usable material worked to a state that it could quickly be finished later to the owners specifications. Hundreds of thousands of them were made in the hill country and traded all over Texas as well as other states.

Many preforms were also used as blades before being finally shaped into a finished tool.
