    Drone for scouting

Some of you guys who know something about drones help me out. I am looking for something that I can fly around the ranch for surveys and scouting. I need to reduce exotic numbers but often can't find them in the limited time that I have to spend with hunters. I can see several applications for it. Don't want to have to sell the ranch to buy one. Several that I have researched say you can control one with an iPad. My iPad is wifi only. Does that matter? Any help would be appreciated.

    A couple of questions:
    1. how much do you want to spend?
    2. do you have anything like a radio already?
    3. Have you ever flown any R/C equipment before?

Everyone will probably suggest the Phantom II, but there are better machines to be had if your willing to build something yourself.

X3!! Me and a couple guys use them to do aerial footage for fishing videos and promo videos. Our nicest one is probably around 2K. You can get by a lot cheaper depending on what type of camera you want on it.

I've never flown radio eqipment before and don't have a radio. I can probably follow directions well enough to build one. I have a bunch of exotic hunters lined up over next few weeks. Let me see what I have left when they leave and I'll keep you guys informed. Be after first of the year.

The guy that flies ours built all of his.....says its pretty easy!! Plus, it will get you more familiar with how to replace parts after it crashes a couple times!!

Your hunter has a drone. I will tell him to take it down with him when he goes. Let you try it out before you buy one. His was in 1300$ range.

                Any sightings?

                  Jim,
I should have known D would have one. Saw him last night in the headlights. Big wind last Friday rained down acorns. I'm still watching cameras every day. Been nocturnal with the blood moon, but getting closer to daylight hours. How have you been?

The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 cost about $300. You can fly it with an iPhone, iPad, or Android. You can also map out a flight pattern and it will fly the route on autopilot.

It's really not hard to build them and you can build a pretty decent unit for less than 1k depending on what you want it to lift/flight time expectations.

You would have to add a remote on to that for another $300 ish plus FPV gear so you can see the video from the camera while its in the air.

Would you be using a gopro camera or something bigger like a sony nex5? Either one will require a gimbal of some sort and figure around 200-300 plus for that.

If you have a hunting ranch, remember this is all a business expense!

And if by chance you have any exotics left over after the season let me know!

I'm not sure what I'm looking for. The Parrot AR listed above has an attractive price but 13-17 mins of flight time isn't enough for 570 acres of thick stuff. I want to be able to see it as I do it plus save to an sd or similar card. This is starting to get like my night vision project that overwhelmed my pea sized brain.

I get about 17min out of my multicopter when flying fpv, a little over 20min without camera gear. The last thing you want is to loose power while up in the air! Depending on your setup you MIGHT be able to get 25-30 min of fpv flight, but thats really pushing it. Most people go with gopros for their size/quality and availability. If you want to fly for longer than that you will have to go much bigger in size to carry larger batteries and expect to pay between 3-5k for just the copter.

If you want to see if this is something you would like I would suggest getting a flight simulator for around $100 and practicing with their fpv views with the quadcopter. Sounds kind of expensive, but its way cheaper than getting into this and realizing you don't like it or crashing within your first few flights.

Check out a forum called rc groups, it's kinda like the TBH of the RC world and has tons of ideas/builds that people have done.
