    How would you deal with?

I have an Uncle who I love and respect very much. But, whenever me or my son bring up or even mention bow hunting to someone else and he hears it we get an "evil" speech from him. His exact words are that "bow hunting is the most cruel way he can imagine to kill an animal". He is a hunter and fisherman. He is very well off and hunts all over including a lease in Mexico. He has harvested numerous animals including Elk, Whitetail and other large game. I have tried to talk to him about this (bow hunting) and have gotten nowhere. He has property I can hunt (for free). I would like to bow hunt on it but I am scared to bring it up.

If anyone has dealt with someone like this or has some advice I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks, BigJohnTex

Get statistics...they speak for themselves. Or, just leave it alone. You don't want to ruin your free hunting rights or your son's for that matter.

My dad is of like mindness. He doesn't think bowhunting is the 'right thing to do'. We still hunt together though(family thicker then water thing). We don't mention anything to each other about it, but I still see the 'look' from him every once in awhile.

My last deer took and arrow to the lung/heart and went approximately 30 yards before he dropped. The deer my father took the same day(late afternoon) took a 150gr Nosler from his 300WM and went 150 yards stopping. The shot got both lungs and the top of the heart(ripping the plumbing out).
No two deer are the same, but I'd have to say mine died quicker that day.

Good luck whichever way you go about it, but remember he's still going to be family after.

Scott (my two cents worth) B

Get Tink to talk to him or Cotton, I'm sure they could convince him.

Some just believe that bowhunting is unethical and that all wounded game is a result of bowhunters. Hard to change their minds. Good luck.

My dad didn't think it was possible to kill something with a bow. When I brought my first elk back and had the horns in my truck, still didn't believe it. Kinda hard headed if you ask me! lol

Make him sit on stand with you and show him how fast you can put one down with a bow. Just make sure you have perfect shot placement. Then again thats just too up close and personal for some.

if he really loves hunting he wouldnt put down bowhunting, in order to protect our hunting rights we need people to agree with it all.... okay so back to the question, i had an uncle that wouldnt bowhunt because he thought the same thing. one season i found out that he shot a buck with his 7mm mag. and it wounded it and got away. i used that as some leverage in that with any means of hunting an animal can be wounded.. and its all about shot placement. i took him on stand to film a hunt and he was hooked so give that way a try

hogkiller has some very good thoughts. If your uncle is open minded you should try to prove your case. It sounds like it might be a touchy subject. It would be a shame to be at odds over hunting methods. It would also be a shame to loose a hunting spot unless you are a bow only guy, then you have nothing to lose as far as hunting is concerned.

Take him with you in a nice comfy popup. Double lung a nice buck with the two blade rage and see what happens......

Lets at least acknowledge that shooting a stick with a razor blade on the end through a deer hoping that it will bleed to death quick enough and leave a good enough blood trail that we can find it is not quite as humane as clipping their brain stem off with a rifle where they are dead on their feet before the sound of the shot even reaches them.

I do both and am not ashamed of it. I bowhunt for myself and my pleasure and thats my first choice but when I am culling deer on big ranches a gun is clearly more efficient. Its pretty hard to find/identify/kill 4 or 5 mature management deer in a weekend with a bow.
