I have a 4 month old jagdterrier that I initially got for tracking and does very well on mock trails that I put him on. I also have him retrieving decently on sticks and such out in the yard and thought that maybe I could get him retrieving doves this year. Anyone have some advice for getting him bird dog trained? Thanks.

Lots of practice!
I have a 4.5 month old lab that is starting on upland and waterfowl.
Best advice I've gotten is to make it a game to him to retrieve and only do it 3 times per session. Do 2-3 sessions a day. Take an hour or so break in between. After that you need to get him used to gunfire.
.22 blanks at 100 yards to start, then slowly move up.

mkguthrie- we trained our jagd to track blood first and foremost and retreiving birds just came naturally to her after that. The first time I dropped a dove that I couldn't find in a brushpile, I just sent her in to find it, and she came out with the bird in her mouth. One thing that I have found with the jagd though is that they're pretty hard mouthed compared to other bird dogs I've had. Ironically, doves aren't a problem but the bigger birds are (she can't stand the dove feathers in her mouth and just spits them out as soon as she gets to me with them, waterfowl on the other hand she'd rather not give up). I started our pup on water retreival by throwing sticks out for her to retreive for us and then switched the stick for a bird. She's been fetchin' them up for us ever since. BadHabit brought up a good point though. With dove season being so close you want to make sure he's used to hearing a gun before you start throwing too many new things at him right away.
