Separate accounts here. We've been married almost 18 years, and together for a little over 20. As a young married couple, we always heard newly weds argued and divorced early mainly due to money issues. We kept separate accounts and it has always worked for us. In all these years, not once have we ever had an argument over money or spending. As long as all the bills and expenses are paid each month, we've seen no reason to question the other on money or spending habits. It has worked for us, and we've never seen a reason to change it I guess. Why fix something that isn't broken is our thought process. To each their own though. Whatever works for your family is what I say go for.

X2 but 3 years married and joint now. Another reason is you both want to retire together and if you don't save together, it'll never happen. Discuss a "max amount" for spending, say $100 or $200, that both are comfortable with that you don't have to discuss for approval. For other expenditures over that, discuss it together first.

Joint - We both review the account once a week together that way the burden does not just fall on one of us.

Separate. I've had too many hookups in the past where I worked 2 jobs just to be able to have a small amount for personal things. I pay her 800.00 a month for rent and try to stretch the rest for my bills, ect.

We each have our own account we had when we got married and a joint account that all the bills get paid out of. But we each have access to each others account. Since I work out of town all the time she handles the bills and most if fmy money goes into the joint account. She also keeps a savings I don't have access to. The reason for that is we are saving up to pay cash for a house and if I see how much money I really have I will want to go buy a new boat or go hunting in Africa. This way I think I am broke but know by the end of the year next year I should be able to almost pay cash for a custom built house. She is way better at saving money than I am.

My wife and I have shared an account for 21 yrs. We've been married for 19. All the couples I've known to have separate accounts are now divorced. With that said, she also stays home with our 4 kids. We share everything.

Shane's posts are spot on, and as always some of the best advice you will read on here. For us, one account works. We discuss all purchases, and are generally together for the day to day stuff like groceries. To each their own, but I refust to be in a position where I have to start a discussion with my wife on who is picking up the restaraunt bill or buying this round of groceries.

All spending on household items and bills comes from joint accountant
All monies go to joint account and then moved to other accounts.
My wife has a mad money account
I take out spending cash se dollar amount she gets transferred into her mad money account.
Then we have a couple different savings for different things
They get the same amount transferred to them each check.
Like Codie said no right answer, key is being upfront and honest
