I miffed a broadside shot at a spike several years ago from a tree stand. I had no idea how bad the shot was till I recovered the deer. I actually hit him in front of the shoulder right smack in the throat. Spitfire head split his neck like a tuna can and he fell over about 30 yards after the shot. Bled much like that elk, yeah I got lucky

I have seen several bulls and bucks lost by being shot in the neck like that. Tons of guys will disagree, and tons will agree......either way, its a matter of opinion.
Exactly!!!!!! I was telling my son the same thing he missed right! It worked out good! VERY GOOD! You see the ark of his arrow! At such a close range!!! My son shot a doe @ 400 yards I said put it right on his shoulder! He missed left and high and headshot it! He jumped on the phone called his grandpa telling him he headshot a doe @ 400 yards!!!!! Lol

All day long, he might have pulled it a little or maybe not, but it worked out didn't even move.

I'm a believer in this... sure, broadside is best, and certainly the most ethical call... BUT I hope I'm not having to make a shot like that if I ever go elk hunting, but if I do get an elk hunt one day it's likely to be a once and a lifetime opportunity and not to shoot a bull like that.... that would be hard to do.

I shot a buck quarterd to me and I didn't love the angle but it was fatal and I ate delicious venison all winter and have a nice European mount I did myself; I'd make that same shot decision again and again.

There was an article in Peterson s about frontal heart shots on elk. Looks darn effective

I went back and watched the video. Maybe he hit the jugular, but he also got wome heart/lungs. That arrow is in there pretty deep and the blood is pumping out fast. I just don't get all the unethical comments....that bull died fast! Again...knowing your anatomy and equipment is key.

Nothing offensive there. Great shot kid. I'd take that shot but only 20yds or less. That shot is a decision for each individual to make and should be based on there shooting skill and experience!

Perhaps we've all felt the heartache that often accompanies a missed shot. Or worse yet, the pit in our stomach at the realization that we possibly made a bad shot. Whatever the case, we owe it to the animals we hunt to do all we can to make a quick, clean kill. Hours, days, and months

                        Read the last three paragraphs

Note the red dot in the last pic regarding frontal shot placement

Shots like this accidentally working and then getting publicized cause lots of wounded animals by less lucky and less ethical hunters....

Yes, the bull died quickly.....but that does not make the shot itself ethical. I think there are a lot of variables that go into what makes a shot ethical. The simple fact of the matter is that most people that are put in the same situation would have never made that shot a lethal one!! You said it right....knowing the anatomy and equipment is key....but in general I really doubt most people could have made that kill. Maybe the kid lucked out, maybe he planned it that way......all we can do is Monday morning quarterback his decisions and judgement. Either way, we owe it to the animals we chase and attempt to harvest to give them the most "ethical" and painless death possible. I still believe this shot is, in general, is unethical and portrays a minimal kill scenario.
