Well guy's and gal's,
Today is going to be a very interesting and hopefully eventful day. I have my Sergeant interview at 2pm today. There are 25 people who put in for 2 spots. If you compare everyone on paper with training and background history at the agency I rate above everyone. As far as years of service I'm 4th in that line at 11 1/2 years. I was a supervisor in the past for 3 1/2 years in Internal Affairs so I have supervisor experience.
Now here's the kicker. I got a call yesterday from the local school district. I had applied for a Network Engineer position some time ago and never heard anything so I figured I was not chosen to interview. Well yesterday they said based on the applications submitted they've narrowed it down to 3 candidates and I'm one of the 3. They said they would like for me to come in for an interview today (Friday) at 8am. This is something I've been wanting to do, getting back into computers that is.
Downside is I'm a bit nervous. Having been at the agency for over 11 years and kind of scared on a career change. I'm still relatively young so that's not an issue. It's more of the uncertainty that the private sector would offer me versus the stability of where I am now. I was in computers before I got hired on at the SO and while at the SO did ALOT of computer work for the county. I've always had my hands in computers one way or another.
Deep down I'm hoping the Sergeant thing comes through because of the dedication to the agency, but if it doesn't and the school district offers me a job I believe I will be changing careers. It's not about the money it's about the room for advancement. At the SO I'm currently a Deputy IV and capped out on pay. In 3 years I'll get a bumped to Deputy V and a small raise but then after that, no more unless I'm promoted. With the ISD job it would start making more then I am now, get me valuable experience but also the advancement opportunities are endless.
I know this is more of a personal decision and I'll have to make it on my own should things fall certain ways. But it's always good to just put it out there and vent.
