James Daughtrey - Who has hunted there?

Looking for some insight on the hunting at JD WMA. My son got drawn for a Nov 22/23 hunt. We are looking to tent camp in the WMA but after seeing a map of all of the compartments we could end up driving 30 miles to hunt from the camp site.

How are the compartments handed out? Selected by hunter? Drawn?

Which compartments should we shoot for?

    Any help is much appreciated.

They Will assign you a compartment. When you get there to Check in, be sure to tell them where you are camping. They usually try to assign based on where you are staying. If you are staying over on 72 by state park they will try to put you in 7-15, If you are by the headquarters, they will probably assign you to 1-6. Deer should be good this year as they have been under hunted the WMA the last 3 years due to shooting it out the first couple years under new management. With the rains, bucks should be at there best. Might want to confirm about corn, last 2 hunts I have been there it was prohibited.

      This was my experience also.

I believe they allow baiting now. If so, it should be a great hunt for you.

We Drew the gun hunt back in 2008 or 2009. Hunted pasture directly across the road from the check station. Was not allowed to corn. Still saw lots of deer, 11 bucks. I killed a 5.5yr old 10 and my son shot his first buck, a nice 6pt.

Which compartments did you guys hunt? Should I plan on taking a couple popups as well?

According to the TPWD info sheet it says baiting is allowed but I will call to make sure.

I have hunted in 12 and 15. Both had a couple 4x4 box blinds already set up but I took a pop-up as well.

Looks in the draw hunt books. If yall are the first in, then the box blinds will be fine. But if they have already run some hunts n there, I would bring a popup to setup another spot.
