My dad was drawn for a muzzloader Elk tag in NM and has been getting ready. He went to the range today to test fire his Winchester 50 cal inline magnum. I talked with him this evening after he returned from Carter's and he had a confession to make. He told me he really screwed up and almost had a bad accident at the range. I asked him what happened and he said he loaded a double charge by accident 4 times in a row! A asked him how in the heck did that happen you know a magnum load in that gun is 150gr tops. He showed me the box of 777 and it was clear what happened. It was a combination of things though and we talked about how lucky he was.
Two year old powder with 50gr pellets fused together. He loaded 3 for a total of 300gr in a gun rated for 150gr. I think the only thing that saved him is he was shooting his lighter bullets. His heavy ones are a full 100gr more and that would have shot the pressure through the roof and might have resulted in a bad accident.
