Worst start of the season so far it makes me sick

Well let's start off with opening weekend.
I slip in the stand and get up in the tree quiet as a church mouse and before I could even take my quiver off my bow their is 4 does at the feeder. Heck of a start I thought at the time. When I had just the right amount of shooting light out steps the big eight I've been all got and bothered about all summer.
14 yards quartering away I center my pin and let the grim reaper eat well it tried to eat because I center punched a rib or something and only got 2 inches of penetration a bent broadhead and 2 broke blades. I looked for blood for an hour and couldn't find anything but my arrow who had a little meat on it not much blood just on the tip and a tiny bit of hair. I'm not bad mouthing grim reaper It was just a fluke in my honest opinion because I've shot multiple deer with them and trust me they get the job done but it did make me second guess myself and make me sick to my stomach for hitting an animal and not harvesting it.

On to this weekend. We've been needing some meat in the freezer so I told dad id shoot a mature doe and get the job done. So this evening out to the woods I went with a g5 montec screwed in to my gold tip. I decided to shoot the montec because my roommate swears up and down about them but I'm still sticking with reaper just my .02 cents.
I get up in the tree and the does are at the feeder but all of them have fawns with them so I decided to wait to see if a more mature doe would step out and 30 minutes later here she comes. She wouldn't hop in the pin for some reason so I ranged her at 40 yards and let one fly and wam! She ducked a good foot and I spined her. She was screaming bloody murder and flailing around on the ground so I quickly reached for my quiver in a panic to grab another arrow and i knocked it to the ground. I quickly climbed down ran over to the flailing doe and bad to cut her throat and it kinda made me sick seeing her in pain and in panic for that long.
I talked to this old man who hints our land about it the only other bow hunter and he said that's one of the down sides of hunting with a sharp stick. I have been bow hunting for 5 years now and never have had a problem with humane kills but I've hit a slump I guess. Just figured id tell you guys on the GS it can happen to anybody.

Do y'all think that eight point will live or come back?
Sorry for the long read guys

Don't be so down on yourself. There are some things that you do not have control over. Deer jump the string, or in your case, drop down. No it's not a pretty sound they make when you spine one, but it happens. Happened to me last year. I had to slit her throat, but I got over it. Stick with it. It'll get better!

has happen to me personally and makes you feel sick. in my humble opinion the fact that you feel bad about it makes you a hunter. In other words you are not out fulfilling your urge to kill something, you are about the hunt and the harvesting. For them to suffer is not your goal and you do everything to avoid it. it will turn around blessings

Dont worry, I know its sad that the buck is in pain...but they are tough animals and 2in penetration isnt much of anything to a big buck. Ive seen spike stab a buck in the rib cage at my stand and both were back at end of season alive and well.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not sad really just feel bad because I didn't do my part as hunter by being as quick and least amount of pain in a kill as possible

Definitely, when in doubt think about how you were in it for the food not the sport or trophy, it justifies the kill a little more, or atleast for me it does. Native americans ran buffalo off cliffs, bet that wasnt a pretty sight, but they had to eat somehow. All part of the game

I know the feeling. Connected on a deer for the first time last year and it turned out to be a non lethal shot. Makes me sick thinking I caused unnecessary pain to that animal. I always hope for a quick and clean harvest.

That buck will live. I'm almost positive from your description you centered the joint in the shoulder. I've hit the same spot with a slick trick and it did the exact same and I killed that deer later in the year at the same stand. Hang in there

PWI! I may have been guilty a time or two...

OP, my nephew spined a deer one time pretty far back. I went with him to retrieve and she wasn't dead so i know exactly what you mean. I had to cut her throat myself... things happen to everyone. I shot a deer and not recovered. It sucks but if anyone tells you it hadn't happened to them, they either haven't had many shots at deer, need to buy a lottery ticket, or they're lying...
