    TPWD Draw Hunts

I applied for several draw hunts. I was selected for 2 of them on the first draw on 9/29/14. My status on the others says 'pending second draw'. Does anyone have an idea when the second draw might be>?

It will be right after the payment deadline for the first drawn.

The payment deadlines have been ~ 2 weeks after the draws, so you will want to start checking back on second draws around that time.

I applied for all rifle hunts except for the Granger bow hunt which I was not picked. I was selected for the free one doe hunt at Sam Houston National Forest from Nov 1- Jan 1. I was also selected for a 2 deer antlerless or spike rifle hunt at Pedernales State Park on Nov 18-20. Payment deadline for it is Oct.18.

Can't you hunt the Sam Houston National Forest any time you want for free without drawing? I've never been there so I just wondered. I didn't even realize they did drawn hunts on National Forest Properties. Or is it drawn just so you can shoot a doe there?

The drawing is for a rifle hunt. Maybe that's the difference.

Doe permit for the Sam is not a "drawn hunt" like the other you were drawn for. You have to have a permit to take a doe during general season whether you use a gun or bow. It's a ton of hard work in scouting to find decent areas to get a chance at a doe, even with a gun, and since it's public land, you have to have a APH permit as well. I'm guessing you didn't really know what you were putting for?

Great question. I put in for 6 hunts, and I'm pending second draw on every one. I honestly don't have a very good feeling about my chances this year.

I've been in the Sam a few times for the Caney Creek Enduro Run but never hunted it. I put in for their hunt because it was free, it is a doe permit and as a last resort in case I didn't get picked anywhere closer to home. And I'm pretty sure I could enjoy myself there as well. I have a back pack, a game cart and a hammock.
