Just walked up on a Timber Rattler in N. Texas

I went across the road to put out hand corn at my grandson's stands. I had a puppy in one hand and a bag of corn in the other. As I walked down the trail, the 4 to 5 ft. rattler coiled and started buzzing when I was about 6 feet away.

My cell phone was in my UTV so no pics. I don't think this is their normal range but it definitely was not a western diamond back. The last six inches of his tail was a dark solid purple color.

He went his way and I came home and cleaned out my britches.

That will make the hair on your neck stand up till you spot them.

Yep, we've actually seen quite a few of them around Decatur. Beautiful snakes and usually pretty docile.

I have seen several in the Paradise area. Never a diamondback.

Was it a black tailed rattler?

It was a med-dark phase Timber Rattler. Up in AR I've seen them almost solid black.
