    Snakes

I got two snakes this week. The first one came off of our deer lease that we have had for 18 years and never seen a rattler. His head fell off.

The second one was in my yard yesterday afternoon. He was very docile. I played with him for a little. He didn't really try to get away he just climbed around on my snake tongs. He then musked and it smelled like he died. I took him 100 yards from the house and let him go. He climbed a cedar tree to get away from me. He was pretty much all black on the back.

I asked my son to take his picture and this is the only picture I got. It wasn't what I was expecting.

What kind is he? Can you tell with such a crappy picture? He was really smooth without a pattern that I could see. About 5 feet long and as big around as a golf ball. You can see his head at the top of the picture. He is doubling back to the camera.

I'm guessing Texas Rat Snake - some are black some are patterned. I don't live too far from you and I catch several in my yard every Spring.

The black snake was in Weatherford if that matters.

wish you had a color photo, my initial guess, if it was in my area, would be a red racer, but it looks to fat to be a racer. The head doesn't look right for a cotton mouth.

Judging by it's head, guessing it's some type of rat snake and not poisonous.

Way too dark and thick to be a rat snake.

"His head fell off". Oh man, that was funny. I don't know why but it was.

Indigo's are about the coolest snakes ever. They regularly munch on rattle snakes. I just didn't know they were this far north.
