I never use a linemen's belt. I do wear a safety harness now...but I never used to..Ive hung a many stand. This whole linemen's thing started about the same time as MANDATORY SEAT BELTS. Its probably safer but wearing a helmet when ya drive would also be safer. Personal choice. Just know your limits and comfort zone...everything has risks.

yes sir...understand...to each his own. I did have a good friend who broke his back in Montana in the 80s. Fell asleep in his stand. Not cool. So for sure a safety harness. I had a stand 4 years ago that I shot 3 deer from in an hour that was only 10 feet up due to thats all that was available. Didn't use a harness on that one. But for sure going up 25 feet ..a harness is wise.

Several years ago we hung stands with no harness and no belt. It was rough and sketchy at best. Never wore a harness in the stand either. Thank god we didn't learn the hard way. We all wear harnesses now!!! They will save your life.

as far as lineman's belt...heres a video of an actual fall from 22 ft....and an example of a lineman's belt failing. I trust the trunk of the tree but no so much any nylon, straps or cords. BE SAFE!

That harness looked like one that you get with the tree stands. I would never trust those...No only are they not made well but it takes a rocket scientist to put them on correctly. My muddy harness and lineman's belt is the only thing you will see me hanging a stand with.

I am so glad you said that. I thought it was just me. I tried to put one together and just thought I was the only one who thought it was more difficult than it had to be! those are dumb straps.

I made an attempt to put one on and it looked like my 4 year old helped me put it on...it was tight in all the wrong places if you know what I mean.

Gotta get me one of these linemans belts. I did both pretty much hanging by one arm off either the ladder or climbin sticks hence the Toyota help. Sweat dont help a grip none either

Using a linemans belt when hanging a stand frees up both of your hands to you can actually do something rathe than hold on for dear life. I've done is both ways and it's 100 times more efficient and safe wearing one.

I'm in the DFW area and would be willing to demonstrate what I have learned and teach about harnesses (treestand certified safety instructor for TPWD and IBEP). I know some of you wouldn't do it even if you thought it was a good idea but I'm willing. Mostly I use climbers rope, climbers caribiners and prussic knots as linemans belts and after doing once or twice it real easy.
Maybe I'll do a demonstration at Bownanza next year also. Couldn't hurt and AFTER someone can buy me a beer...

I only use ladder stands now, attach wheels on to the bottom section --it makes for a great deer carrier

Before anybody starts preaching, he did check his stand the week before, but he thinks a squirrel might have chewed on the strap causing it to break.

Squirrels kill people all the time. I have had a hungry hatred for squirrels since I was kid. The great squirrel wars are about to crank back up
