    SE TX. Food Plot Planting

When do you typically plant your food plots in SE Tx (NW of Jasper)? I normally wait until a good rain in early Oct. but with the moisture this year, I could plant now. Also, what is your best blend for deer? This year I am planting Iron/Clay Peas, Winter Wheat, Austrian Winter Peas, a bit of Arrowleaf clover, Turnips and a bit of Radish. Deer in our area won't normally touch Oats, so that is not in my plans.

    Thanks.

I planted Trohpy Magnet fall wildlife mix last thursday in Brazoria county south of houston. This is my first attempt at a food plot and I need it to come through for me. I pulled my card yesterday and noticed the squirrels and coons are empting my feeder. I did notice yesterday that the grains that did not get covered up good were starting to sprout.

I planted oats and some of the throw and grow stuff about 3-4 weeks ago. Fertilized last weekend and in one of the spots the deer are keeping the oats trimmed down pretty good

What is your planting process? I was in a rush so i didnt get to put out weedkiller, but the plot is in the back of my property so i will be able to mow to keep the weeds down. I tilled it twice(putting down 13-13-13 fertilizer before the second till)packed it back down alittle, brodcasted my seed, and then drug a piece of hog paneling over it. What would you have done different?

Im in BC as well. I plant the first of October, & this is how I do it once my seedbed is prepared:
Disc, Broadcast big seed, Drag, Roll, Broadcast small seed, Roll.

I fertilize about 3 weeks later once the sprouts get going good.

I keep mine simple with small plots and just do oats. If I lived closer and had more time, I'd do more. Usually plant around beginning of Sept. But some years I wait when I can plan around rain.

Mow, disc, fertilize, broadcast, drag with chain link fence. Hope for rain.

I have several plots that I plant annually. Also, I have a roto-tiller, which is invaluable for me in sandy loam soil. I till about 3 times and just planted yesterday afternoon, due to several 60% chance of rain days for us. I sewed the Iron/Clay peas and wheat, then lightly tilled them under. I then sewed on top, the turnips, radish, clover and mustard seeds. With the sandy soil and hopefully a rain within the next day or so, my plots should sprout with a few days. Once they are up about 3" and upon a high rain chance, I then place 13-13-13 over the plot.
