I need help diagnosing a gas stove problem.

My oven and broiler won't light.
It's a GE. Stove top still works fine. It's about 8 years old. I am also not smelling gas when I turn it on. The burners on top make the clicking sound of an electric sparker but the oven never did. Is the lighter in the oven different than the range top? Any ideas?

    Thanks,

I should say that it lights sometimes but the problem is getting worse.

The oven has a glow plug type thing, it glows red hot to ignite the gas.

It will look something like this.

The igniter is out. Simple fix. Sears wanted $125.00 to repair. Looked on ebay and found the part needed and 4 days later I was back cooking.

It is a hot surface igniter. You should be able to see it glowing when you turn on the oven. Our oven at the deer lease did the same thing. Wound up being a bad valve. Ignitor was fine.

Odds are the igniter is not working, they get hot, then red hot, then white hot and then it allows the gas through the burner. Open the oven door, remove floor pan, sometimes there's a heat shield to remove, the element is in the back. Usually 2 screws hold it in place, a 2 wire electrical connection. Take it with you, they're about $40 if I remember right.

Good copy y'all. Pretty sure it is the igniter.
                Thanks!

Just because it glows red doesn't mean it's good either. They get weak. They have to draw X amount of amps before the gas will be allowed in by the gas control valve.
