    Havalon Blades

I have a Havalon knife. It is great.

I was wondering why the replacement blades have an expiration date?

So people go out and buy more. Lol its a marketing technique. What do most people do when they see the use by date on milk is the day they are going to drink it. (throw it away) when you can actually drink it past the date. Some people don't think and will most likely get rid of them. Just my .02 cents

I would guess because they are surgical blades and will dull through oxidation over time. They aren't making their own blades, just buying them off the market that already exists for surgery. But, that's just a guess

My guess is because they also make surgical blades for hospital use. The blades we use in the hospital I work at are all packaged very similar to the blades havalon provides with all their knives. Foil lined packaging with expiration dates.

I figure they are surgical blades and they are dated for medical use.

My patients don't seem to care.

Dont wanna hijack this thread but what version do yall have? The piranta or barracuta? Whats the difference?

Looking to pick one up for this season since all my knives were stolen and all I have left is my Wyoming Knife skinner.

barracuda is bigger... piranta is almost the perfect size for skinning/fileting..
the 60XT blades are perfectly shaped.
regardless which one you choose...it will be the last skinning knife you buy ..unless you want to keep extras around in case you lose one.

I don't know for sure, but I'd agree with Jaime on this one.

FTR, I order 3 to 5 boxes (of 100) blades at a time. I'm sure some of them "expire" before I use them.
So far, none of the dead animals have complained.

Thanks for the explanation, will be picking one up from Cabelas today after work.

Ive always liked my Wyoming Knife for the replaceable blades. This will be a great addition to it since someone thought they needed my knives of Alaska more than me.

don't even look at the expiration date

all my blades have been frighteningly sharp . . . .

Thats a ton of blades. How many deer do you get off of one blade.

I have found if I keep a fixed blade to help make and cuts that I have to use force on I dont break any of the havalons and they last longer.

                            Boom! Winner.

Best purchase of the last few years for me.

I was gifted a piranta, and absolutely love it. While it won't replace my stic for skinning, it does get a lot of the work, especially the detail work.
