    Turkey in Kaufman?

    Hey guys,

Yesterday I was looking up season dates and such for Kaufman, where I'll be doing the lion's share of my hunting and I noticed something - no info on Turkey. The species has a 'hunt dates by animal' page at TWPD, but the county itself has no dates. If anyone knows, is that because there have traditionally been no birds harvested in the county, or because bird killing in that county is illegal?

I'm asking for 2 reasons - the county falls in a specific hunting zone (that includes turkey season) and the property was listed for sale (several years back) as a potential turkey hunting location (with reported sightings of birds).

I hunt just over the Kaufman Co. border in Van Zandt Co. I've never heard of anyone killing a turkey in either county. I could be wrong, but my family has been in the area for the last 140 years. To my knowledge, the last turkeys in Kaufman Co. were killed in the 1920's or 30's.

I know they have been doing restocking efforts of the Eastern Turkey in East Texas, but only those counties with a season have a hunt-able population. Kaufman has no notable population and no season.

Here is a pretty good TPWD article on the Eastern Turkey restocking efforts: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulati...eastern-turkey

As a lifelong Kaufman county resident and roamer I'll tell you this....there's no season because there's no turkey. PM me with any questions about the area.

Thanks to both of you fellas. That's...informative, to say the least. Florida has a few places like that, but I was clueless. I guess arrowing a beard this year wont be on my list! Really appreciate the info.

Btw- when I was a kid there WAS a small population around where I grew up- but no mas. My grandpa blames it in poachers.

I recently videoed a group of about 20 turkey crossing the road on FM2515 in Kaufman County. Now granted they looked pretty tame and probably someone's in the area that got loose because I drove up within 2' of them videoing.

Not sure, but I could have just reached out the window and grabbed one! It was about 2 miles from my place and if there was a season in Kaufman, you can bet I would be trying to call them in.

TPWD tried to re introduce turkeys around Wills Point and Emory area in the Mid 90's but The LOCAL poachers had them killed off in a matter of weeks.... Very sad.
