Anyone want to give me some advice? On how to play the wind.
I know "you want to hunt with wind in your face. " I'm kinda lost past that.
I keep hearing "don't spook 'em on your way to your stand"
and "you want to set up to catch em coming to & from bedding to food etc.
So 2 things -
1 - which stand for which wind ?
2 - how do I approach stands ? (I get "wind in face", but how do I need to consider where they are coming from??)
Small property (15 acres) mostly very thick. It's mine not a lease. I only bow hunt. Tons of deer signs - scat, tracks, we see allot of deer when not hunting. Didn't see a ton of deer when in a stand last yr. feeder torn up by hogs. Doe or non legal bucks or too far away. This yr On camera near feeder I'm seeing regular does and 2 bachelor groups of 5 or 6 ea. about once a week.
I have 4 tree stands up.
1 - stand near Feeder (F) with Camera. (good for any except W. wind, right?)
2 - stand northwest corner (??) 2 shooting directions , M = mineral block.
3 - stand on a main trail. in middle (good for N. wind , ??)
4 - stand Swst corner small throw n grow plot 50 x 50 ft & mineral block - I hunt this one the least. ( good for S. or E wind, ??)
Here's a hand drawn map.
HI-lighted areas = I can see more than 5 yards (rest of land is pretty thick )
x= tree stand with arrows shooting direction.
grass = grassy area or where I put throw n grow.
circles = trees and thick brush.
I stay out of the refuge area. Property about 400 yards by 200 yards.
North and South Neighbors have cattle & pastures several hundred acres ea. and gun hunt - they may be leases.
East and west neighbors have cabins they only use once a month or less. And they have 3 feeders running yr round for cattle. And each has stock pond within 50 yards of my property line. the ponds connected by the creek.
As far as I know - I am on just about the only bow hunter around. never see anyone else until Nov.
Sorry for the long post - any advice appreciated.
