So guys, I'm starting to think it might be hogs. I just thought if it were hogs, it would be much worse. This is about a 8'x8' area.

That's armadillo rooting for sure, not hogs.

Gonehunting, so are they searching for bugs to eat, or actually looking for a place to dig a deep hole and lay up in?

This if they are only there late at night and you don't want to stay up all night to shoot them. Works really well as my next door neighbor does it all the time.

In the pictures you posted above that looks like Armadillo rooting not hogs. Generally if it was hogs you would know it unless the hogs got spooked just as they started.

The only thing you really can is be on watch. I shot 4 last week and missed a 5th. I'll keep my .17 outside the door when I'm actively looking so it doesn't fog up. Lernt my lesson on missing the 5th.

You have grubs. Get rid of the grubs, the armadillos will leave.

Go to the Dollar Store and buy a box of mothballs. Scatter a few around the area the dillo is digging. I have been doing this for over 30 years. Runs them over to the neighbors.

My mother-in-law called me scared to death because armadillos were digging right by her bedroom window at night. I came over and sprinkled cayenne pepper all over the ground around her bedroom window. They haven't came back and this was months ago. Mythbusters tested this as being effective at repelling bears too.

My neighbor borrowed one of these traps and we caught 2 in 2 nights.
Haven't caught 1 since, guessing they are all gone.
Simple trap and it works great.

Jackie Bushman may have a tutorial on how to catch them with a dip net. If you try that method, I hope you are better than he was.

Like others said you will have to kill the grubs. Too late to kill them this year as they are harder to kill the larger they get. Need to spread Scotts GrubEx in June-July and this will kill the young grubs that will start coming to the surface when their is lack of moisture in the ground at the end of July into August.

For now I would water one area really well to being the grubs to the surface and setup a live trap to catch them. I would definitely recommend a large trap as these things have gotten out of my smaller ones by bending the door up and escaping.

I keep a shotgun handy for the ones I see at night and it's very effective if you aim for their head.

I had the same problem last year and this year has been MUCH better after using the grub ex.
