TX Hunting License Requirement - Is this right?

Hey guys,

I was in Walmart in Dallas a few days ago asking about getting a hunting license. I offhandedly mentioned 'hey, to get a hunting license, do I need proof of hunter education?' I asked because I still have my florida license, but that's all. The girl says to me, 'No, you don't have to have all that. You just need ID and you'll have to pay a little extra.'

Wut?

You don't need proof of hunters ed to get license but you have to have it when hunting.

Yeah you can also register online. That's how we did it.

I guess she meant that it's extra to buy a 1 year deferment. Next year, you would need the class.

But for the record, buy your license online or at least someplace like TPWD. The folks at walmart, academy, etc. generally have no idea what they're doing. I have had them print multiple licenses until all of my info was correct.

You don't have to have proof of hunters education, and you don't pay extra because you don't have it, just the normal rate of the license. Ive never been asked to show my hunters ed card, just my drivers license. But until you get your Texas license they might charge you the out of state fee, which is a lot of money, but I'm not sure about that part.

Ok - so ultimately it's a good (and legal) idea to get the hunters ed card. Can I do that without having to re-take it in this state?

Some people have the number printed in ther license. If not it will say huntes ed required and then you have to carry proof with you.

So true but unfortunately they are everywhere.
I went to a local mom and pop store to buy my YTD fishing license in December and they told me there was no such thing that all fishing license expired in August. I had to go back the next day because they accidentally over charged my card by $87.00

Your Florida Hunter's Ed Card will be good in Texas also. You will not have to retake the course. You can get a duplicate FL card HERE You do not need your card to purchase a license.

You have to be a resident of Texas for the past six months to purchase a resident license and you will need documents to prove your residency. Otherwise, you will have to purchase a non-resident license.
