I let my dog run with a friend of mines dog one weekend while we were on a hunt and he picked it right up. At our lease we try and make sure he is involved in every recovery. Even if one of us sees the deer go down. I put him out where the deer was shot. let him sniff around and away he goes. All dogs differ a bit I guess. My dog picked it up really quick. He will track for about 100 yards and come back to make sure I am following. I shot a few rabbits with my bow at home and let him smell the arrow and away he goes.
For practice you can freeze deer blood in ice trays and take a deer hide and cut it in pieces. When you have time defrost a cube of blood on a piece of hide and go make a trail. at the end of the trail tie the hide in a tree for the dog to find.
make sure you change your trails up frequently from beginning to end. These are smart dogs.

If you use the same trail the dog will run to the hide and bypass the trail.
I personally don't leash my dog on a deer trail but on hogs I do.
IMO tracking comes naturally to these dogs and you will both have a good time doing it.

Will training using pig blood work until I can get some deer blood? I killed a few pigs this past weekend and saved the blood. I mixed it with some water then blended it real good and put in bottles. Thanks for any help!

Blood is blood. Deer, pig or beef - it's all the same. Now, what you use as a drag to lay down the trail, thats a different story.

That said, I use pork blood that I buy at a local Asian grocery store. I strain it real good and then dilute it with water to make it go further. Seems to be doing good for my 6mo JRT.

Hey guys appreciate the props for my dogs. I dont know if fowlwaters has said anything but we bred Lizzy to Teebow again so keep your eyes open on the ads, could be a batch due in late Oct early Nov.

We saved all kinds of blood we could get our hands on. Froze it in zip loc bags. Once thawed, we'd dilute it with saline solution (that adds nothing to the odor). Also, that coagulated blood left when you gut a deer/hog/etc. is just as good as the liquid blood. It will dissolve with the saline as well. If an amimal gets gut shot, save all the nasty blood too... most trackers like a little gut shot on iffy trails... much more odorous than just blood and scent sticks around longer because of the "solids" in the trail...

When laying down a trail, make sure the pup cannot see you. Also wear rubber boots. Depending on where you put down the track, a good way is to ride a bicycle and put the track down from it. As the pup develops and makes it look so easy, cut the amount of blood in half, but keep the distance covered the same.

One note of CAUTION: DO NOT put a green pup on a blood trail of a shot animal that you have not already confirmed will end in a dead animal... Nothing will mess up a started pup like an unsuccessful track.

Jared has one of our pups from Lizzy and Teebow and should have another hit the ground end of Oct. out of our last litter 3 pups went to tracking homes and have reported the kind of news we are looking for. Lizzy is out of Skeeter Crittergetters (Kevin) dog. I will keep yall posted.

My tracker. I'm pretty sure there was a badger at the bottom of that milkshake.
