It's a type of orb weaver called a garden spider..maybe a yellow one. Mistaken for banana spiders often. I definitely wouldn't have killed them bc they eat mosquitoes and other annoying bugs and are cool looking...but im sure it was "coming right for us!!!"

As others have posted, that is a garden spider. I have never seen them bite anyone. I actually wish I had some at my house to keep the mosquitos away.

One day I was picking tomatoes and the spider left it's web, went down on the ground walked over and bit me on the ankle then climbed back up on it's web. I guess I hadn't "fed" it and it was reminding me of feeding time. It didn't really hurt or swell up and I didn't kill the spider. I just said some not so nice things to him and wasn't as careful of the web after that. Bite me and you have to work a little harder.

            Congrats.

Was this high fence or free range?

Writing/Yellow Garden...etc. I've also heard them referred to as banana spiders but they're not THE actual banana spider. They always get a pass around my place b/c they do well with keeping down the insects in our garden.
