How hard is it to change a condenser fan motor in an AC?

I'm not sure if it even needs changing, but one of my fan motors outside is making a rattling noise that just doesn't seem right. AC repairs seem expensive as hell, and the parts look like they are less than a couple hundred bucks, so I was wondering if this is something I could do myself.

    All the best,
    Glenn

Yes. Make sure you get a replacement that works with what you have. A rattling noise could be a broken blade or mount. If you change the motor change the capacitor also.

Fairly easy to change, a few wires and bolts. Make sure the power is off. Take the old fan to and electrical or A/C supply house. Probably around $100.

Thanks. That's what I'm seeing. People quoting $1000 to $1100, and I'm watching YouTube videos of homeowners completing the job in about 15 minutes with a $100 direct replacement fan. Now I just need to find an AC supply house in San Antonio. Getting reading to Google it now, but if anyone knows of one they would recommend, I'd appreciate it.

Problem you're gonna run into is that A/c supply houses do not and will not sell to unlicensed customers. NO matter what you say or do. Your only option is to go to Grainger, get a buddy to do it or call a repair company. Most condensor replace ya will run around 3-400. Not 1000 unless you have an ECM Motor that is new and hard to find. But of you did, you wouldn't fin it anywhere besides in a supply house.

AC supply companies do sell to unlicensed customers. I have bought capacitors and fans before and I am not licensed. Now freon is a different story.

From what I'm reading, if it touches freon, I won't be able to buy it. But a fan doesn't touch freon, so I'm hoping it won't be an issue. I know that some of the companies won't sell anything to an unlicensed person.

Take it to LLoyd Armature works on the east side of San Antonio. They can match that motor up with no problem

Not true. I bought mine local in DFW. No license needed unless I want freon. Let me know if you need help getting a motor.

Thanks konahoss. I'm going to check out Lloyd Armature this week, and if I can't get it there, I'll give you a shout. It's still working, but it's making noise, so I'd rather catch it BEFORE it goes completely out.

As stated above, some supply houses will sell to unlicensed people and some wont. Of course you cant handle r22 etc legally so you would be screwed there. I bought and installed my entire system including ductwork, condenser, air handler, pan etc Everything except the refrigerant and had a licensed guy sweat the copper and charge it.
