Oddly enough, my deer don't ever touch the AWPs in my plots. They hammer the crimson clover and buck forage oats though.

when i hunted down in Karnes county, we planted about 30 acres of Austrian peas every year and the fields were loaded with deer. they were easy to grow and the deer keep them down pretty good.

We do plant oats and come back later and overseed with crimson clover with good results. I don't plant all at once but it probably works, I just haven't done it.

I would do Rye grain because all u have to do is get the seed to the dirt and deer LOVE the rye cereal. Just cast it out prior to rain and u can plant it as long as temps are above 34 degree, so if u need to reboot your planting its easy to do and unlike oats the rye likes cold weather.

Turnips are what work the best for us! Planted along skinny plot and broke it up into four different plants, sec 1 was whitetail extreme mix, 2 was peas,3was clover and rye, 4 was turnips which was farthest from my tree stand and I watched deer walk thru all three plots to get to turnips

To me there is no magic bullet....its more about planting a mixture of cereal grains, clovers, and brassicas in one location year after year that they feel secure eating at. They get used to coming into that one location to eat and associate that location with food. It can take time for them to used to it.....it took 2 years to get them used to eating in my main food plot. Now they just coming pouring into that field.

I agree with courtatlawjudge about planting them inside feed pens......they won't do well simply because of the foot traffic and the overgrazing in such a small area.

My fall plots last year consisted of winter wheat or forage oats, overseeded with ladino clover. Still had a good stand of clover a few weeks ago after mowing the stubble and and weeds.

I always have great luck with Austrian winter peas. If I cant find those just plain iron and clay peas do fine. I'm always wrapped up in the deer. I love putting up a small utilization fence to see just hoe much they are eating. I'm always surprised.
