Why not just buy a .17 HMR instead?

You'll have to get a "kit". Just replace the barrel. you'll have to add a weighted bolt.

        Heere's mine....

If you are wanting the 17hmr,then you will have to start with a .22mag Ruger 10-22.You probably can find it at MidwayUSA.com.The 17hmr is nothing but a necked down .22mag.The .17mach 2 is the .22 long rifle necked down,I don't think they sell barrel kits yet,but haven't checked.I think Midway would have it was out there.

For a 17HMR you do need a 10/22Mag and these are no longer made, but you can probably find a used one
You then have to buy a barrel and a stock that will fit the new heavy bull barrel. You just replace the stock and screw on new barrel

For a 17Mac2 you need a regular 10/22 you will need the new barrel and stock but also as mentioned above need a weighted bolt because the recoil is different.
I am looking to convert my 10/22Mag and for a nice barrel and stock it will cost me right at $300

Volquartsen would be the best. IMO

I second that. By the time you build one; gun, stock, barrel, and trigger you will spend nearly as much and they will most likely still build it better than you can.

Anybody know if a bolt action Marlin .22 mag be converted to a .17 by replacing the barrel?

It would be cheaper to buy a new rifle.

Ruger does still make the 10/22mag. you might want to wait however, because Ruger is going to come out with a 10/17. I just got a 10/22 for Christmas and the instruction manual lists a 10/17 rifle, but they havent put them in their catalog or online yet.
