Dog Collars for keeping your dog in range/Electronic collar

We just built our house and don't plan on building a fence anytime soon.

Our property backs up to a larger acreage and then there is a lease behind that piece of property. I want to let my dog roam our land if I can keep him within an acre area.

Can any of you recommend electronic collars that do this so i dont have to keep him on a run right now until we decide on fence type?

You can get a petsafe system with a wire. You will want to bury the wire but it does not have to be buried initially.

Keep your pet safe with PetSafe's in-ground pet fences. Easily install and customize to fit your pet's needs. Shop now!

They have a wireless version too. There is some training involved in teaching your dogs where the boundary is. These have worked well for my dogs. They are afraid of being shocked. You should follow the instructions for training, I did not follow it exactly due to time constraints. So I did not do the best job training them, but what I did worked. The first time I set one up for them I walked them around on a leash to show them where the boundary was. Well, they got shocked a couple times (keep in mind this is not the proper training method.) They wanted nothing to do with it and basically went to their kennels and stayed there. This was set up around my camp area at the ranch. Anyway, it took them quite a while before they ventured out, but they figured it out. I set one up at my place in Wisconsin. They got shocked once, and they remembered it a year later. They would not leave the garage. As time went on they began to venture out. I just let them find out where it was on their own.

I have a friend that has tried to use one of these. His dog runs right through it. After 30 seconds of being shocked, it stops. I am not sure what (if any) training he did.

My dobermanns laughed at the electric fence. Upgraded to high output shock collar, still there drive to get free was worth the buzz. I watched her multiple times. She would pace back and fourth getting ready put her head down and run for it. She knew she was about to get zapped and i would see her eyes close up while she was running and then a quick yelp and twitch but kept running. Once she was on the other side she would stop. Wag her stub of a tail and do the happy dance and take off on her mission. The hard part was when i went a caught up to her and tried to get her back pass the point of no return. A smart hard headed tough dog will not keep a bit of discomfort stop them from doing what they want. Ended up doing it the old fashion way. Trained her and kenneled her. Your hound might get a whiff of something he likes and disappear. Dont trust your buddy's life on a shock collar. Also keep in mind it does not stop other dogs or people from coming into his zone.

We use the petsafe on my Drahthaar and it works like a charm. She used to roam and now she want leave the yard even if we leave her collar off.

I used the Petsafe Wireless system with good results on my wifes Corgi and Pug. I followed the training method and they knew the limits.

I'd recommend the Petsafe Wireless Pet Containment System. It works great on my 2 Labs. It's a little more expensive than the wire but burying the wire is a pain and when the wire breaks, where is did it break at?

Another vote for petsafe wireless. Keeps in my igh drive German Shorthair. It will keep shocking them if they are out of the boundary until they come back in. It eliminates running through the boundary to freedom. Do the training for a couple of days and they will respect it. I can even take my system with me when we travel to our lake house and it works just as good. The collar beeps when she approaches too close to the boundary as a warning and believe me, she respects it.

We use a Pet Safe radio controlled collar with our lab. Our yard is kind of like yours . we have 5.5 acres and don't have a fence yet. I didn't want to bury the wire in the rock we have around the house so I went this route instead. The dog learned her boundries and respects them, even though the battery has been dead for a month now. It has an adjutable range and we give her all the room she needs.
