    Ever drill a well?

Here lately I've been giving some thought to drilling a water well. Given the cost, I'm considering going the DIY route and either renting a trailer-mounted rig or buying a used portabe rig, drilling one for us and one for my FIL then selling it.

Anybody with any relevant experience to tell me if it's a doable thing or just crazy thinking on my part?

We're not far from the Sabine River bottoms - water shouldn't be too deep here. On the other hand, there are Sulphur Dioxide wells/pipeline nearby - don't want to drill into a pocket of SO2 and wipe out all my neighbors.

My neighbor drilled his own well and things turned out Ok. Not sure he could have done my well though...as my 95 footer had about 30 feet of pea gravel. Yes, pea gravel...not sure why that's a big deal, but my driller said he'd never seen it that thick and it gave him trouble. I dunno, sorry I didn't/couldn't help.

I'm in newton county about 5 miles from the river as the crow flies . I drilled a 40 ft well , hit water at 20 , with a 1 1/2 inch water pump and PVC . I put in a 1 1/2 casing in by necking down the water pump to 3/4 . Put the 3/4 pipe in the casing and washed it in . Took me about 6 hours in mostly sand . After the last big drought I had a guy come in and drill a 90 ft 4 inch well to water the cows .

Here in wood co. I hit water shallow but it was not great quality. I wouldn't want or in my house but fine for yard. My well is at 500ft. Great water!

Took em 3 days start to finish. I know nothing about drilling, but if them crack heads could do it my 3 yo could figure it out with a little time

I have been drilling wells since 1975 and I would suggest u bite the bullet and pay someone to drill. Water well rigs are really busy rite now due to oil and gas exploration. if u find a water well rig for sale then most likely it is a piece. Unless u r talking new rig and then the cost will be way up in the 100,000 's. I am not saying u can't drill one on your own but it might cost u more than what u can hire one for if u have to keep a chitty rig running, or stick the pipe when drilling.

If you think hiring a professional is expensive wait until you hire an amateur.

You might want to watch this if you really want to drill your own well. I just had one drilled by a reputable well drilling company. WORTH every penny to have it done right.
Its a skill I do not possess.

I have a little rig I'm working on ( for the last 3 years).... I think I have an old post in the DIY section and some youtube videos.

There was another guy on here that bought a portable rig and drilled a bunch of wells and sold it. I'll have to do a search and see if i can find who it was.

It's not too difficult you just have to go slow and let the water do all the work.
