Backyard Patio w/ Fire Pit Ideas

Hey fellas…. Im in the process of building a home and I have decided to do the back yard patio myself versus have they home builder take care of it. The ideas I'm tossing around are a stained concrete patio w/ a square concrete fire pit built into the patio, or a mortared flagstone patio w/ a square flagstone fire pit built in as well.

Not sure which route will ultimately be cheaper to do. I am open to both ideas and other suggestions. Does anyone have experience doing either of the two, or something similar?

Thanks in advance for the help.

btw, the total square footage of the patio will be roughly 290 square feet. Dimensions are 20'x12' and the fire pit will be a built section will be built into the the top left hand corner on a slab that is 7'x7'. It will essentially look like a capital "L" laying on its back.

I can't get mine off Pinterest.. She keeps coming up with stuff from that place. The dinner stuff not bad either..

The fire pit she's wanting to use tree rings. Let me tell ya that stuff is hard to find. We found them at Ace Hardware. Good luck.

All we have left to do is our COOL-DECK application to be completely done with the project. I got the bench idea from what another TBHer posted. Use the search button for 2-3 threads on your subject.

What do you have that will be under the burning logs? I would think that the heat from the fire would crack the cement in due time.

It is a gas firepit so both of our local BBQ/FirePit stores (Humble & Conroe) said there was no need for firebricks as I saw folks using on wood burning firepits on the TBH thread. I also checked with two neighbors that had gas firepits and they did not use firebricks in the inside either........but they did not even know what they were.....lol! There is nothing but a 16" or so gas line surrounded with the cinder blocks inside the pit. On top of the cinder blocks (covering them) is a layer of the bricks you see on the outside.

Would not make the pit ground level, safety hazard. If you end up with a round pit consider making it where you can put a "raised" top to make a table out of it. Washing machine drum and some plastic chairs wii work.

My brother and I built one a few years ago behind my house I sold this April. Trying to find pics. If I find em I'll post em. It was a square firepit about 18" off the ground. ALL concrete and the four rectangle benches around it were ALL concrete too. At the time I had been doing concrete for 12 yrs so I knew everything about it. Mixed the concrete ourselves to an 8000 psi concrete, which was better for the high temps. I didn't put it fire bricks and wish I would've. It cracked after the second use. This was a wood burning pit so got pretty hot.

Anywho, fixin to build another one at our new house and am looking at something like this. Handprints will be mine, my wife's, my sons and my daughters. Pretty cute I thought and I like the stone look.
