Friday, July 25th Brazos passed away after a short illness. Brazos was 16 or 17 years old. Just want to say his passing is tearing me up. He has been part of the family. Never neglected or abused. You could swing a stick at him or swat your hand at his head, he didn't flinch.
He's health went down hill about 2 years ago. Last Monday noticed he'd not eaten all his breakfast and then very little after that. He started going off in the yard and just laying down content just to be there, all night if he wanted. Never showed signs of pain even when pressing on his body. He knew he didn't have much daylight left.
I "called in" sick Friday to be with him. He was outside with me laying in shade till about noon. He looked like a drunken dog as he stumbled back into the house. That was the last time he walked. He was going fast. My plans were to take him to the vet to be put down when my wife could be there around 5:30 so she could say her last good bye. Around 3:00 he was really out of it. Had the vet put him down. He weighed 69#s. 1/3 less than in his prime of about 92 #s.
Brazos was there all through my sons teenage years. He was a Rottweiler and Labrador mix. My sons picked him out from the all the other dogs at the SPCA. They asked the attendant, which dog is barking the loudest? I thought he was too big but my family insisted. His name was Watson then. Nope! He's not a Watson. A past neighbor had a boxer named Durango. How Cool! I was looking at the Texas map and giveing suggestions to my wife or towns, countys, rivers. Going west to east, the Brazos River. That's the one! Brazos.
Couldnt ask for a better dog. Not a hunting dog. But a dog for security. He loved kids. Even infants. Should have seen the look on a new mother when he walked over and licked a 3 month old. Wow! Over the years he defended his property, kept the little punk arsh kids who would hang out on bayou out of my yard. They loved to grab my canoe and put it the ditch. He put two hispanic tough guy males up on their hood one night as I walked him without a leash. He would walk with me on my left side. Those two punks said some words about the dog and then stomped their foot to scare him. NOT! Brazos went on the attack mode. "Get your f*^&* dog!" he he he. I called him off. Back at my side we continued our walk. What is it with people stomping their feet. That kind of incident happen twice more, once on a leash. Good thing I had him on a leash.
I live in a cul de sac. He knew everybody there. Everybody liked him and had no fear of him being off a leash. Funny, one day he went after neighbors parents that came to visit. DOH! Strangers.
He also went after a neighbor's son that dicided to show up for the first time in years. Best of all, the next door neighbor had an small family reuion. Kids playing in front yard. Brazos is laying in his front yard watching. This big guy comes out and starts yelling at his 4 year old daughter like an use to be Army Drill Sargent. Brazos got between the girl and her yelling father barking at him. I was in the garage. Called him off. The dad then start yelling at me for having a viceouis dog when kids are out. Later that evening, politely introduced myself and told the big ( I mean Big) ol boy, Brazos was protecting the girl from him. He bolters back, " that dog anit going to protect my girl from me!"
Replied very serious and a confident nod, " Oh yes he will" "Have a good night".
Theres many more protection stories that just dont have the time for.
I miss him. Dang! (tear)
I layed him to rest in the back yard next to another great dog, Niki, (Nichole)
Was proud to chisel down 3 feet of rock hard gumbo for my dear freind.
