    Chl question

My chl expires on my birthday. Do I have to renew it before it expires or can I wait?

I believe there is no grace period anymore now that they made it where you don't need to retake the class. I'll look up the law in a few.

I think you have one year to renew before having to start all over again, I did mine online and it was expired for a few months, this was awhile back.

I thought the 1 year grace period went away during the last (83rd) legislative session when the requirements to retest were removed. Still trying to find actual law on this though. Apparently per the TX DPS CHL website they haven't updated it since the 83rd session so it's not black and white...

        From the site tonight

        21. Is there a requirement to take a continuing education course before I can renew my Concealed Handgun License (CHL)?

Per HB 48 (83rd Legislature), continuing education is no longer required for CHL renewal. CHL holders will simply apply online and submit the supporting documents for discounted fees or special conditions. NOTE: At this time, the receipt page (CHL checklist) will still indicate a CHL-100 is required. Programming required to remove this language is underway; until the “check list” is updated, applicants may disregard the statement requiring a CHL-100.
Texas seems to be as slow and inept as the US Government...

        32. My Concealed Handgun License (CHL) has expired, and my renewal application is in process. Can I carry a concealed handgun while I am waiting to receive my new license?

No. There is no grace period or extension for an expired CHL, even if your renewal application has been submitted. You must wait until you receive the CHL before you are allowed to carry a concealed handgun.

A buddy of mine at the gun shop was scrambling today to renew his online. His birthday was yesterday and he forgot his expired. Was not legal to CC between midnight and when he printed out the completed form this afternoon. Renew yours now, online, so that there's no lapse. If you allow it to lapse, you will not be legally carrying a concealed firearm- until you do the renewal. It's quick and easy online.

          Happy Birthday!!

By law DPS must send you notice 60 days before the expiration of your license. When you get that, renew...

I'm in limbo as mine expires the 1st of September, I've already done the renewal online. Not sure about this form as they attempt to use your previous photo and fingerprints and it's not an instant 'approved'. Eventhough he's done it and paid the money, he better double check that he is indeed legal, a receipt won't be a valid CHL. Ignorance is not bliss in this case, but I say if you're doing your job to conceal it, the better for you!

DPS will send you a notification 6 months before your license expires. You can renew anytime within the 6 months leading up to the expiration. It's all online now. No class required.

If it expires you cannot carry until you get your new license in.

If you have any questions let me know.
