    possible spring??

So i have a lease in Robert lee. there is a natrural spring on the property that pools in one location. it looks like a small stock tank about 40' x 20' and is pretty deep. i can't see the bottom but the water is very clean, and the cattle hit it VERY hard. i took a 10 foot pole with me last time and i can't touch the bottom as far out as i can reach.
my main feeder setup is about 300 yds away, uphill. probably about 15-20 foot elevation difference.

so i noticed this past weekend when doing some work there was a muddy spot right next to my feeder. it was almost dry, but we haven't had rain in about a month. i live 30 miles from the lease.

i pulled my camera card and checked when i got home. in the middle of the night on august 1, between 1225 am and 2 am, a puddle of water appears. it was there for three days. just about every deer that came to the feeder drank from it, until it dried up on the 3rd of august.

Wondering if ground water found its way to the surface?? should i just dig a hole and see if it fills with water? it would be VERY convenient to have water there right next to my feeder... the animals seemed to like having it there.

    thoughts?
    anyone had this happen?

if i do get water, is there something i should do to keep it from filling back in with dirt? line it with crushed rock or something? there is no brush around it whatsoever. it's in a small feeder pen area. closest cedar is probably 10-15 yds away.

Wow that would bo too cool! I think I would dig it out and see if its worth the effort of going more indepth.

I think a liner would be best. Maybe a barrel with the top and bottom cut out of it and holes in the side to let water seep in? Maybe a layer of rock between the barrel and the walls of your "well" to let water filter through so it wont clog up the holes in the barrell with mud? Just thinking out loud

I was gonna suggest this...especially any cedar that is close. They just suck up water.

              Good luck!

10 - 15 yards in cedar distance is not very far off. Bring your chainsaw with you as well. You're already gonna be sweating.

I grew up in Mississippi and we had what we called Artesian Wells all over the place. Most had a metal pipe stuck in the ground and water would just flow out like a faucet you couldn't shut off.

The best, ice cold water ever!

well, i didn't hit water... but i'll admit it was because i forgot my dang shovel and pickaxe. remembered it half way to the lease. will be heading out again next weekend to check on the food plot so i'll give it a go then...
