I was watching a HS team and they have their linemen back pedaling 5 yards to set up a new LOS. Literally running backwards. I heard one kid ask and they said it is the Tony Franklin system? That it tires the DL out by having to run farther? It confused me and maybe I am old school but I played OL in college and professionally in Canada...but....1) doesnt the OL have to back pedal as far as the DL runs forward therefore getting just as tired? 2) Doesnt this create momentum in favor of the DL firing out into an OL back pedaling? Any thoughts or experience with this out there?

I played back in the caveman days so doesn't make sense to me but that is why I am not a coach! I did look up Tony Franklin and not impressed. 1-11 with Cal Bears (offense didnt produce) and fired from his two previous coaching positions for his offense not producing. Coaching is a rough gig!

I coached the o-line for 24 years in college.. never heard of it . But i've been out of it 10 years now... you never know!! New things come along. Texas Tech tried this a few years back with wide splits. They only did it for a year as I recall.
Offensive Tackles give ground every pass play, its called kick and slide keeping shoulders square till the defender gets even with them and ride him around the qb. Tackles are your more talented quick footed guys with long wing spans. Usually taller 6-4 and up. Guards and centers should give ground inch by inch. They are your bigger maulers that wrestle every play.
Pass blocking creates a cup for qb. centers and guards holding their ground and Tackles running DE's around. The KEY to all pass blocking is never get beat inside!! Always take away the shortest path to the qb.
When the zone blocking concept came along and that is still the concept for most today it was designed to get the defense running sideways and get 2 defenders in one gap for a cut back. This was developed because of the size of players and the ability to just move them straight back 3 yards and a cloud of dust are over. We called it push and pester !!

When i was in hs, our offense ran a 4 wide shotgun offense. Very west coast. We were a running district, so we scored ALOT of points. Our defense was a 3-3 stack with 2 "dogs" who were way outside lb's almost in the slot position. There wasn't an offensive line that could figure our defense out. Was the best run stopping defense i ever seen. You gave up the long balls cause of single man coverage and only 1 safety.
That was no help, but it got me reminiscent of old times..
